Racine County backed Democratic candidates for governor and attorney general on Tuesday, flipping both statewide contests from Republican to Democratic as part of broader Democratic gains across Wisconsin.

County voters also chose a Democrat for sheriff, Don Vandervest, and a Democrat, Trevor Jung, for the 21st State Senate District, according to the results reported Wednesday.

Bob Maynard, who describes himself as a former lifelong Republican, has volunteered with the Racine County Democratic Party for about two years. His work has included Wednesday night phone banks and weekend canvassing to knock on doors and encourage people to vote.

Maynard said he changed parties in response to the Trump administration and now spends several hours a week on local election work. He said voters were weighing candidates' backgrounds and priorities and looking for a change, and that responses to volunteers had been largely positive.

Maynard also cautioned that Tuesday's outcome should not be taken as settled for future elections, saying Democrats still need to show voters the choice was the right one. In the congressional race, Republican Bryan Steil carried Racine County but lost his district overall, as Democrats gained control of the U.S. House.
