The Wausau School District Board voted on Oct. 12 to join nationwide litigation involving major social media companies.

The board adopted a resolution authorizing the district to retain counsel for the case. The resolution directs counsel to begin the litigation and authorizes the superintendent to sign the necessary documents.

The litigation alleges that major social media products harm the mental health of young people. A presentation to the board cited recent verdicts in related cases as part of the discussion.

District participation is expected to require about 8 to 10 hours of staff time. The arrangement with counsel uses a contingency fee structure.
