WellProEdge in Mount Pleasant sells CBD and hemp products, and its owner, Javier Camacho, contacted reporters about a coming federal change.
A 2025 federal spending law narrows how hemp is defined. Most of the change is scheduled to take effect on Dec. 11, 2026.
Under the earlier 2018 framework, the limit focused on delta-9 THC. The new approach counts THC more broadly and adds limits for finished hemp-derived products, so some items now sold as hemp may be treated differently.
Customers at the store said they use the products for pain or to relax after physical work. Staff said many customers are older adults or people with disabilities.
Camacho said he supports regulation but wants lawmakers to hear from local businesses and customers. Supporters of tighter rules have raised concerns about intoxicating products and access by children.
