Microsoft has filed an updated layout for its data center campus in Mount Pleasant that calls for fewer buildings, but more total space than its earlier plan.

The filing calls for seven one-story data center buildings, plus a storage building and two utility substations. Together they total about 5,878,080 square feet, roughly 400,000 square feet above the previous nine-building total.

Village staff recommended approval ahead of the Plan Commission meeting set for Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. at Village Hall. From there the matter could advance to the Village Board.

A company spokesman said the redesign was drawn up to allow faster building and quicker access to added capacity, and that it does not signal a smaller ambition for the site. The company said residents would be kept updated before vertical work starts.

A first data center on the site is finished and a second is being built next to it. The village has allowed up to 15 buildings on the property, though how many will ultimately be built remains unclear.

Village estimates put taxable value at about $7.7 million per acre, down roughly $2.3 million from an earlier estimate, with officials noting a final assessment could come in higher. Microsoft became Racine County's largest taxpayer in 2026, paying about $19.75 million on about $1.224 billion in assessed value.
